Fall is here at Western Market!  We invite you to come out and shop our fantastic seasonal products, celebrating the bounty of Michigan's harvest and colors.  Join Lil' Stevie (the newest addition to the Selvaggio family, Steven and Cynthia's son) and explore our fall selections, straight from the farm!

Last week Steve, Steven and Cynthia journeyed up to Capac and Belleville to scope out the pumpkin and apple crops at several farms.  While the growing season presented some challenges, the end results are beautiful: pumpkins are sized up and gorgeous and the apples are tasting sweet and crisp.

We've hand selected every heirloom, pie and carving pumpkin on display at our Outdoor Center.  An array of beautifully colored gourds, corn stalks and strawbales are also available for all of your fall decorating needs.

Don't forget to check out our variety of hardy mums, tropical houseplants, local cider and donuts and beautiful fall bouquets.

High Mowing 100% organic, GMO-free garden seeds are back … and just in time to start early spring transplants for setting out in your garden in April!  We’re committed to bringing you only the highest quality products for you garden, and it doesn’t get any better than High Mowing.

In 1996 a young chap named Tom Stearns set out to grow and supply high-quality organic seeds to gardeners and farmers under the High Mowing banner.  Eighteen years later, the company is flourishing as the standard-bearer for environmentally responsible seed production, research and supply.  Each year, new varieties are introduced after vigorous trials at their home base farm in Wolcott, Vermont.  Enhanced flavor profiles, increased pest and disease resistance and the preservation of heirloom, open-pollinated varieties guide their work.  We have over 144 of their seed varieties, covering early spring veggies to stunning flowers and everything in between.

Look for our new “Western Transplant & Garden Guide” on the seed rack for nifty garden tips, including how to start your own organic veggies, fruits, flower and herbs indoors.  You can also download the PDF and print it yourself by clicking on the title.  We’ve included handy tags on the seed rack that indicate what crops to start now, along with additional information on some our personal favorite varieties.

If you’re hungry for more dirt on varieties, cultural information and kitchen preparation ideas, sign-up for “The Seed Bin,” High Mowing’s stellar newsletter here.

We love ginger for it’s pungent, warming, spicy flavor. The versatility of this ancient root makes it one of our favorite super foods.

Ginger has a distinctive fragrance and heat that can be used in sweet or savory dishes. At Western Market, we have ginger in candies, salad dressings, marinades, sodas, kombucha, beer, and chocolate. We also carry ginger teas, fresh ginger, minced ginger, powdered ginger, and crystallized ginger.

On any given day, we carry between 7 and 15 different varieties of citrus fruits here at Western Market. Simple oranges and grapefruits for our fresh squeezed juices nest in bins next to gourmet Meyer lemons and an ever rotating selection of tangerines, moros, and minneolas. The growing seasons determine some of the variation and the discerning eyes of our expert produce buyers determine the rest. January - March happens to be the season for the sweetest tangerine.

Watermelon Radish

The watermelon radish has been a darling to chefs and gourmets. This heirloom Daikon radish is crisp and juicy, ranging in size from a golf ball to a softball, depending on when the root is harvested. The mildly sweet, mildly peppery flavor make this radish delicious and interesting on the palate, yet it is the gorgeous coloring that turns this humble vegetable into a show stopper.
