In 1996 a young chap named Tom Stearns set out to grow and supply high-quality organic seeds to gardeners and farmers under the High Mowing banner.  Eighteen years later, the company is flourishing as the standard-bearer for environmentally responsible seed production, research and supply.  Each year, new varieties are introduced after vigorous trials at their home base farm in Wolcott, Vermont.  Enhanced flavor profiles, increased pest and disease resistance and the preservation of heirloom, open-pollinated varieties guide their work.  We have over 144 of their seed varieties, covering early spring veggies to stunning flowers and everything in between.

We love ginger for it’s pungent, warming, spicy flavor. The versatility of this ancient root makes it one of our favorite super foods.

Ginger has a distinctive fragrance and heat that can be used in sweet or savory dishes. At Western Market, we have ginger in candies, salad dressings, marinades, sodas, kombucha, beer, and chocolate. We also carry ginger teas, fresh ginger, minced ginger, powdered ginger, and crystallized ginger.


On any given day, we carry between 7 and 15 different varieties of citrus fruits here at Western Market. Simple oranges and grapefruits for our fresh squeezed juices nest in bins next to gourmet Meyer lemons and an ever rotating selection of tangerines, moros, and minneolas. The growing seasons determine some of the variation and the discerning eyes of our expert produce buyers determine the rest. January - March happens to be the season for the sweetest tangerine.

Watermelon Radish


The watermelon radish has been a darling to chefs and gourmets. This heirloom Daikon radish is crisp and juicy, ranging in size from a golf ball to a softball, depending on when the root is harvested. The mildly sweet, mildly peppery flavor make this radish delicious and interesting on the palate, yet it is the gorgeous coloring that turns this humble vegetable into a show stopper.


Cauliflower: Two Recipes


Cauliflower has been done a terrible injustice. Years of boiling and cheese drenching have given this nutrition rich powerhouse a bland name. In the right hands, cauliflower is an enormously versatile and delicious vegetable. Cauliflower is among the healthiest foods in the world, providing a great source of vitamin C, vitamin K, folate, fiber, Omega-3 fatty acids and B vitamins; low in fat, low in carbohydrates, and it is a low glycemic index food.


A head of cauliflower can be a boring vegetable if you don’t know what to do with it. Here are two different preparations to help explore the versatility and joy of this cruciferous wonder. These recipes are simple, fast and economical. Each of these dishes will make an excellent side, but can also shine as a main course. The seasoning in each recipe is straightforward, which makes it easy to adjust for personal preferences.
